Donaghadee Garden

This is a garden which can be accessed from the front of the property by 2 entrances, one at each side of the house. There are 2 doors to the rear of the property, one from a conservatory which juts out into the existing garden space and another which is regarded as the back door. There should be provision for an oil tank and general storage.

There is only one specific requirement from the client, and that is to include a woodshed in the design. It has been established that this client likes ‘hearts’, is bohemian in outlook and will embrace colour and to a degree, quirkyness. The garden is oddly shaped and as such, lends itself to ‘discoverable’ areas but all linked by a common theme.

I am concentrating on a bohemian theme and more specifically on the 2010 film ‘Alice in Wonderland’ directed by Tim Burton.

This film is a feast for the eyes, a Kaleidoscope of colour and visual interpretation. Landscapes are either wonderfully ordered or decrepit and ruined. These visual extremes provide me with contrasting possibilities for design, allowing me to interpret ordered structure and to an extent, crumbling decay, all of which will be underpinned by colour and flow, into, through and eventually out of the garden. There will be quiet areas where peace and tranquillity can be experienced as well as areas for entertaining and wildlife.

The garden will have height through the use of topiary and trees selected specifically for year round interest, it will have colour in planting inspired by the vivid filmic landscape, paths that will lead and intrigue as well as ‘secret spaces reminiscent of the film location at ’Antony House’ Cornwall.

This garden will satisfy the requirements of individuals who want a space that fits their personalities, who embrace gardening but not in an all consuming fashion, it’s a place to welcome friends and will stimulate and provoke discussion.
